about
Story behind the song:
During a visit to his fiancée in Fredericksburg, Iowa, Dr William Pitts stopped at Bradford (Iowa) and wandered the area and particularly enjoyed a spot in a wooded valley formed by the Cedar River. Pitts envisioned a church building there and, on his return to Wisconsin, wrote "The Church in the Wildwood" [1857], about a church that didn't exist!
He was surprised upon his return to the area to find a church being erected where he had imagined it five years before. The building was even being painted brown, because that was the least expensive color of paint to be found.
There's a church in the valley by the wildwood
No lovelier spot in the dale
No place is so dear to my childhood
As the little brown church in the vale.
(Oh, come, come, come, come)
Come to the church by the wildwood
Oh, come to the church in the vale
No spot is so dear to my childhood
As the little brown church in the vale.
How sweet on a clear Sabbath morning
To listen to the clear ringing bells
Its tones so sweetly are calling
Oh come to the church in the vale.
(Oh, come, come, come, come)
Come to the church by the wildwood
Oh, come to the church in the vale
No spot is so dear to my childhood
As the little brown church in the vale.
